About the General Amenities Committee...
Cllr Janet Holmes
The General Amenities Committee has a lot of work to do! It looks after everything that isn’t picked up by the other committees, from the two play areas, to the lake, to the remembrance memorial in the porch of All Saints Church!
We arrange for the upkeep of paths, organise grass cutting and tree maintenance, and make sure that fences and gates are kept in good repair. We work with local groups – such as the residents who maintain Gresford Lake – and are able to provide the finance needed for annual maintenance to take place; we also arranged for the cycle rack by the village notice board to be installed and we are seeking to highlight the brilliant contribution of our residents via our Community Spotlight scheme.
We look after the safety and upkeep of all the equipment in the two children’s play areas in Gresford and Marford. We are currently trying to negotiate a lease for the Marford Play Area with WCBC. Although the Community Council is responsible for the children’s play equipment in this area, WCBC is currently responsible for grass-cutting and maintaining the gates, fences, hedges and trees. When the lease is finalised we will be responsible for these things too.
Many of the aspects this Committee looks after used to be taken care of by WCBC. Over the years, as their finances were squeezed, they have stopped doing things and the Community Council has had to step in and take these things over. Of course, this then means that we have to find the funds instead and this is one of the reasons why the money the Community Council gets from your Council Tax – which is known as the ‘Precept’ – often has to go up. We believe the community would rather pay a bit extra, and keep its play areas and grass and fences, etc., rather than lose much-loved amenities like these.
Next GA meeting coming up: Wednesday 19th October at 6.30pm (virtual)
